Group Therapy with Psychiatric Management

Dr. Comeau’s outpatient practice focuses on the treatment of depression and anxiety and is group therapy based. As an important part of his patients’ treatment, they are required to attend group therapy on a regular basis (weekly) if needing ongoing psychiatric management. Facilitated by Dr. Comeau, Discovery Groups provide a safe and supportive environment for his patients to explore our common humanity and to experience deep and meaningful human connection. In this process, we become better equipped to navigate life’s challenges and build our confidence to overcome emotional and psychological barriers. Groups are composed of 8 members who meet virtually on a weekly basis. While his patients attend their weekly group therapy sessions. Dr. Comeau will provide psychiatric management, including medication management if indicated.

Group Therapy with Psychiatric Management

  • Weekly virtual group sessions are currently being offered either Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
  • Facilitated by psychiatrist Dr. Kent Comeau
  • Each session is 1 h 40 minutes
  • Up t0 8 participants
  • Recommend 12 month commitment to attend the group
  • There are no group sessions in July/August months.
  • No show fee of $50 per missed session 
  • Resident of Alberta, living within 150 km of Medicine Hat
  • Moderate to severe anxiety or depression symptoms, but not requiring a higher level of care (such as case management support)
  • Must be referred by a primary care provider
  • Age 18-65
  • Deemed suitable for virtual care
  • Willing and able to commit to weekly virtual group therapy sessions (there is a no-show fee of $50 per missed session)
  • Have failed at least 3 antidepressant trials (non-response or intolerance)
  • Not actively suicidal (requires higher level of care)
  • Depression and anxiety symptoms not deemed to be primarily caused by substance use
  • No severe active substance use issues
  • No primary psychotic illness or bipolar I disorder
  • If personality vulnerabilities present, patient is deemed suitable for group, has clear goals and is willing to grow and commit to the group

Group therapy is covered by AHI
